Stomach Cancer Treatments
The treatment for stomach cancer will depend upon the stage of the disease, and what other parts of the body have been impacted. The most common treatments used to treat stomach cancer include:
Surgery
Surgery can be performed for some stomach cancer cases, to remove part of the stomach (or all), as well as the lymph nodes. The specific surgery procedure will reflect the progress of the disease, the organs affected, and whether the surgeon is attempting to alleviate symptoms, or slow or stop the advance of the disease. The surgical technique for early-stage stomach cancer is called endoscopic resection. This surgery does not involve an incision, but is performed with the use of an advanced tool called an endoscope which is passed through the patient’s mouth, into the stomach. For some cases, the entire stomach is removed, and the end of the esophagus attached to the small intestine.
Chemotherapy
Anti-cancer drugs are introduced into your body by vein, or taken in pill form. The purpose is either to shrink the size of the tumor prior to surgery. Chemo is also used to kill cancer cells left after surgery is complete to attempt to stop the disease from returning. Radiation is typically part of this treatment.
Targeted Chemo Drugs
Certain stomach cancers cells have a hormone that can be targeted with a special drug called Trastuzumab. Before targeted therapy is chosen as part of the treatment plan, it must be determined if the cancer is the type (with the hormone, HER2) that responds to this targeted treatment.
Radiation
Stomach cancers are most often treated with external beam radiation therapy. The beams are carefully focused upon the cancer, and the procedure is painless, and lasts only a few minutes. There are side effects that many patients experience, including skin problems, nausea, vomiting, and affect blood cell count.
