The bladder is the final organ in the urinary tract before urine exits the body through the urethra. Cancer can begin in the cells on the inner lining of this organ, causing what’s known as bladder cancer. While older adults are susceptible to bladder cancer, it can also occur in younger people as well.

Our doctors have developed an excellent program for bladder cancer treatment at our private Los Angeles facility that is personalized for each patient's needs.

Bladder cancer is generally diagnosed during its early stages due to its somewhat obvious symptoms. During this time, it is highly treatable.

Despite this, bladder cancer has a high recurrence rate and those who have fully recovered from bladder cancer must participate in follow-up exams to ensure any recurrence is treated rapidly. Our patients find comfort in knowing that our doctors are highly experienced and provide among the finest bladder cancer treatment Los Angeles has available.

Testing and Diagnosis

In the diagnosis of bladder cancer, the doctor may choose one or more testing options. The purpose is to conclusively determine whether bladder cancer exists or not. If it doesn’t exist, the patient and doctor can do further testing to determine what is causing the symptoms. Tests to diagnose bladder cancer include:

  • A cystoscopy is an endoscopic procedure used to examine the bladder by inserting a scope through the urethra. During a cystoscopy, the bladder cancer doctor may collect a biopsy of the bladder’s interior lining. This allows the doctor to examine the bladder’s interior and determine if there are signs of bladder cancer.
  • A urine sample may be examined to check for cancer cells.
  • A number of imaging tests may be performed by a bladder cancer doctor to determine if bladder cancer exists. Some of these tests utilize a dye, which helps doctors determine where cancer may be located. Such imaging tests include x-rays, CT scans and MRIs.

Bladder Cancer Treatment

There are many different forms of bladder cancer treatment available at our private Los Angeles facility. In many cases, the treatment type will depend upon the severity. Treatment options by a bladder cancer doctor include:

  • Surgical procedures to remove the cancer. If the cancer has not spread very far, a transurethral resection may be used to simply remove the tumor. For intermediate cases of bladder cancer, the surgeon will remove the tumor as well as a small section of the bladder. This is called a partial cystectomy and is done when the cancer is limited to one portion that, if removed, will not affect bladder function. For advanced bladder cancer, a cystectomy will be performed, which is surgical removal of the entire bladder.
  • Biological therapy, which is a technique to boost the body’s immune system. In the case of bladder cancer, biological therapy is typically administered through the urethra.
  • Chemotherapy may be used against bladder cancer. In this procedure, cancer-killing drugs are administered intravenously or directly to the bladder through the urethra. Chemotherapy can be used on its own or in conjunction with surgery.
